What happened to Chapman Hobart "Hobey" Kitchen ?

Frederickson and Hobey Kitchen meet outside the Mad Garden

Frank Frederickson, coach of the Princeton hockey team and a one-time NHL warrior himself, watched the Rangers take their licking and then wandered through the rear exit into 49th St.

He had progressed only a couple steps when a hand tapped his shoulder. "Hiya Frank!" the owner of the hand shouted, "don't you remember me?"

Frederickson looked. He saw before him a shabby individual who obviously was down on his luck. Overalls, cap and grime. Frederickson dug into his pocket.

"What do you want - a cup of coffee?"

The stranger laughed harshly. He ignored hundreds of persons who walked past him. He merely looked at Frederickson and said, "You don't know me! You really don't!"

Frederickson again scrutinized the cap, overalls and grime. He admitted he didn't know.

"God, man," shouted the derelict. "I'm Hobey Kitchen!"

"God," echoed Frederickson. "Hobey Kitchen - really Hobey!"

It was so. Hobey, the one-time wonder of the National league! The big salaried defenceman who played side by side with Clem Loughlin! Way back, back in 1926, he worked as a teammate to Frederickson on the Detroit Cougars. A great prospect; a man managers respected and wanted in their own line-ups.

Hobey couldn't keep training. He forgot his early days with Niagara Falls, his cradle battles alongside Babe Siebert and his wars with the Maroons. He forgot most everything, including Detroit, and he marched down the forlorn street that few athletes care to explore.
