Stanley Roy Crossett was born in Tillsonburg, Ontario on the 18th of April in 1900.
By 1930, Stan was living in Port Hope, and is known to have
played for the Port Hope Eagles, though his statistics are not
available. The following season found Stan in Philadelphia as
a free agent, where he would play with the Quakers in
their only NHL season along side
Hib Milks and D'arcy
Coulson. Stan would only play 21 games in the NHL,
managing no goals or assists. Despite the few hockey statistics
available on Stan, he surely played more hockey, as he returned
to Tillsonburg to talk his brother into joining him on an unknown
team. His brother was engaged to be married, and decided to
honor his commitments, but is said to always have had an ounce
of regret.
After hockey, Stan settled back into life in Port Hope and married Laura Hill, where they began a
successful taxi service. They later sold the Taxi service and purchased the Ganaraska Hotel,
which is still in operation today. Stan was always very successful in his business ventures,
which was somewhat of a surprise to his family, as he was said to have been very generous to people
who were down on their luck, and often had more non-paying customers than paying at the hotel. They
also claim "Stan never worked a hard day in his life, but was always successful". Despite his very
people oriented business ventures, Stan was a very independent person, and did what he wanted to at
the drop of a hat. When visiting family in Tillsonburg, he insisted on staying in a hotel, despite
numerous invitations to stay with family. It was also common for him to finish a meal, stand up suddenly
at the end of dessert and say "Well, I'm going now!", and walk out the door with no goodbyes or chit-chat
and drive back to Port Hope.
Stan must have worked hard in the Second World War, as he worked
his way to the rank of Sargent, and received the King and Queen
of England in the field, of which a photograph can be seen by
clicking here.
After the war, Stan once again returned to the Port Hope area,
and purchased a pool hall in Millbrook after selling the Ganaraska
Hotel. Stan spent many years alone after the death of Laura
in 1976, before joining her on July 26 1992, at the age of 92.
Both Stan and Laura are buried
in the Union Cemetery in Port Hope, although not
together, as Stan is in a veterans section. Stan and Laura did
not have any children, and likely had few people attend his
wake. His brief obituary
in the Port Hope Evening Guide offers no further details
of his life, but mysteriously lists the name "Dempsey", and
completely neglects any mention of his wife. |
