Stan Crossett
Albert "Toots" Holway was one of early hockey's true sportsmen who was intensely loyal to his teams, his players and his colleagues on and off the ice. Born in Toronto on September 24th, 1902, he later moved to Belleville Ontario, as a youngster with his parents and six siblings. It is there that he began with the junior and intermediate leagues between 1917 and 1920, and showed great promise. It is also where he acquired the nickname "Toots", which is what everyone called him including family. Apparently when he was just a little fellow, he had long curly blond locks, and his mother often dressed him in snappy "Buster Brown" suits, which made him so cute that a neighbour began calling him "Toots", and that is what he has been called ever since.

Following brief stints with the Calumet Miners and the S.S.Marie Greyhounds, Toots and his older brother Harold "Bouncer" Holway, sought greener pastures in Brockville, where he attracted the attention of big league scouts.

In 1924, Toots got his shot at the big leagues when he was signed as a free agent by the Toronto St-Pats of the NHL. He wasted no time in proving his abilities and his performance captured many headlines in the sports pages as well as the attention of the team's management. He returned to the Toronto club for the 1924-25 season and and part of the 1925-26 season before being claimed on waivers by the Montreal Maroons. This would prove to be a blessing for Holway, as he went on to win the Stanley Cup with the Maroons in 1926. For his efforts he received a pair of 14k gold cuff links, which can be seen by clicking here. Toots would start the next season with the Maroons before being sent down to the minors with the Stratford Nationals.
