Sports writer and self-proclaimed hockey fanatic Joe Pelletier

hockey history, including sections on hockey heroes,
international ice, crashing the crease and personal stories from
Joe Pelletier himself.

On October 8 2011, the 1971-75 Windsor Spitfires of
the Southern Ontario Junior Hockey League will be
gathering for their first-ever reunion to mark the
40th anniversary of the return of Junior "A" Hockey
to Windsor.
The SOJHL Spitfires played a significant role in
laying the groundwork for the the franchise's OMJHL
bid which resulted in the granting of a Major Junior
"A" franchise for the 1975-76 season. In spite of
several alumni having gone on to NHL careers as
players, coaches and officials, there has neither
been an alumni resource for these gentlemen nor has
their story been truly documented.
Approximately 50 alumni players and coaches of the
SOJHL era will attend a private event at Beach Grove
Golf & Country Club and will later attend a game
between the Oshawa Generals and Windsor Spitfires at
the WFCU Center. This gathering is almost to the
date of the Spitfires' October 7, 1971 opening
night. Another point of interest is that the Oshawa
Generals were the first team hosted by the Spitfires
in its inaugural '75-'76 Major "A" season.
This reunion event is being presented by Windsor
musician and SIHR member Richard Janik.

When the puck drops at centre ice on Sunday to launch the long-awaited
comeback season of the Winnipeg Jets, the moment will not only mark the
official return of NHL hockey to the Manitoba capital but also the return of
the faceoff itself to its place of birth.
It’s fitting, says Bill Fitsell, the dean of Canadian hockey historians and
author of the 2007 book How Hockey Happened, that the NHL’s revival in the
city will begin with a faceoff — first a ceremonial puck-drop, no doubt, then
the real thing — as a key innovation in the game’s rules comes full circle to
the mid-ice blue dot at Winnipeg’s MTS Centre.

SIHR WAS WELL REPRESENTED at the Belleville
McFarland's 50th anniversary celebrations on Saturday.
It was organized by a group headed by the
indefatigable James Hurst of nearby Wellington
(Dukes). Despite inclement weather (rain, sleet
and snow) Belleville-ites turned out to reenact
the Front street parade of 1959 that attracted
50,000 when the Macs returned from their World
Championship series in Czechoslovakia.
Moe Benoit of Dayton, Ohio and Pete Conacher of
Toronto, were among those who rode in open
convertibles and received the cheers of their
shivering fans of yesteryear..
"It was awesome!" said SIHR member James Sinclair,
who came all the way from Lethbridge, Alberta for
the occasion. This large and likeable fan of the
1951 world champion Maple Leafs, joined Ed Grenda
and Bill Fitsell from nearby Kingston, Ontario,
and met and mingled (and lunched) with the
survivors of the first Canadian club to go behind
"The Iron Curtain."
Newsletter editor Wayne Geen attended the Meet and
Greet tribute evening at the Empire Theatere where
an excellent documentary and Aaron Bell's fine
commemorative book - "More Macs More," were unveiled.
The accommodations and facilities in Belleville
(two hours or so east of Toronto) bode well for
the SIHR sessions that will be held in the
venerable Belleville Club, across Pinnacle Street
from the classy Clarion Hotel.
On top of all that we will have the enthusiasm and
good humour of Host James, who showed how a small
city can pay tribute and celebrate the memory of a
world accomplishment. You should see the special
edition of The Belleville Intelligencer that he
filled with stories and pictures! Stay tuned.

Aaron Bell, who has a couple of hockey books under

veiwing, including a copy
of the DVD and book and meet and greet) are on

Additional former hockey greats included

produced by Emmy award-winning and former

The Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA), which
hosted the 2003 SIHR AGM in Richmond Hill, is
requesting assistance from SIHR with a new project.
The OMHA will be featuring "OMHA Moments" in its
publications, and on its website to commemorate
the 75th anniversary of the OMHA organization.
Therefore the OMHA asks that if any SIHR members
have special memories or recollections of OMHA
unusual records that were set, interesting events,
players, and moments that SIHR members can and
wish to share with the OMHA, that the SIHR members
forward those special recollections, even pictures
if available, to the OMHA.
Kevin Boston of the OMHA is working on this
project along with new SIHR member, Rob
Andrusevich. Please send your recollections to Rob
at randrusevich@gmail.com.
This is a good way for SIHR to thank our OMHA
hosts and to continue to maintain our relationship
that we have built up with the OMHA through their
executive members Jim Kindley and Jack Christie.
The OMHA is asking for a quick understanding of
key information that may be available by early
next week so it can consider its options.

March 27, 2005 -
WHEN 16 of the most dedicated hockey researchers
in Canada gather for their monthly meeting, you
don't expect a salute to director Ron Howard's
new boxing movie to top the agenda. But this is
the Society of International Hockey Research,
fiercely priding itself on digging out the game's
toughest truffles and cutting down the tallest
tales. Their ranks applaud fact-checking as much
as coaches value back-checking.
...
SIHR's members at large include broadcaster Brian
McFarlane, ex-St. Louis Blues general manager Ron
Caron, TV honcho Ralph Mellanby, Howie Morenz
III, Frances Donellan (daughter of Hall of Famer
Frank Patrick), professors, authors,
sportswriters, politicians, NHL team employees,
scouts, pastors, museum curators, WHA die-hards
and ex-players such as Morris Mott.

the web. Well done Ernie!

available on the website in PDF format.
|
 |
|
The SIHR database now has more than 210,000 rows
of player statictics. While other sites have
more current statictics, SIHR's data is
unequaled in pre 1960 data.

Hockey League of the Maritimes, 1895-1925, George
Fosty
- Lord Stanley's Cup, Andrew Podnieks

Scanlan
|
 |
|
A new book by SIHR member Kevin Shea
titled 'BARILKO--WITHOUT A TRACE' chronicles the
tragic life of Toronto Maple Leafs hero, Bill
Barilko. After scoring the Stanley Cup-winning
goal in 1951, Barilko and pilot Henry Hudson
disappeared while on a fishing trip. Their
skeletal remains were discovered still strapped
in the cockpit of their crashed plane in the
unforgiving forests of Northern Ontario in 1962 --
the year the Leafs next won the Stanley Cup.
Fifty years after his disappearance, The
Tragically Hip brought Barilko's story back to
life in the song, 'Fifty Mission Cap.'
The book includes extensive and exclusive
interviews with Bill's friends, colleagues and
teammates
as well as both Gord Downie and Gord Sinclair of
The Tragically Hip.
'BARILKO--WITHOUT A TRACE' will be available in
bookstores October 20, 2004.
